Change Text Size
MacOS users
You can very simply increase or decrease the text size using short cuts keys:
Increase: Hold the ⌘ (command) key down while pressing the + (plus key)
Decrease: Hold the ⌘ (command) key down while pressing the - (minus key)
If you have a touch screen device, you can also pinch the screen with your fingers to increase or decrease text size. You can also use your fingers on a Mac trackpad to zoom in and out of a page.
You can also change text size in your browser's settings.
Windows and Linux users
You can very simply increase or decrease the text size using short cuts keys:
Increase: Hold the Ctrl (control) key down while pressing the + (plus key)
Decrease: Hold the Ctrl (control) key down while pressing the - (minus key)
If you have a touch screen device, you can also pinch the screen with your fingers to increase or decrease text size. You can also use your fingers on certain types of trackpad, e.g. a Chromebook to zoom in and out of a page.
You can also change text size in your browser's settings.
Free Screen Readers
MacOS X VoiceOver
Starting with OS 10.4 (Tiger), Mac OS X has included a fully integrated screenreader called VoiceOver. You can switch this on via system preferences.
Click the icon and scroll to system preferences, then click accessibility.
Scroll to VoiceOver, then click enable
While in the Voiceover settings screen you can access training on how to use it.
Free ChromeVox Chrome Extension
Google ChromeVox is a Google Chrome screen reader extension for visually impaired users. You will need to be signed into Google Chrome to install it.
Sign into Google Chrome
Click install Google ChromeVox
The screenreader will then start reading the screen aloud.
You can highlight specific sections of text using your mouse and trackpad to control what is read aloud.
NVDA by NVA Access (Windows only)
NVA Access is a registered charity providing a free screenreader download, they ask for a donation to help with the cost of development but a donation is optional.
Download the free NVDA software execution file.
Run the file and install.
