Jobseekers Allowance Sanctions

Contents

Overview

When you claim Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) and do not follow the terms of your Jobseeker's Agreement, you may have your benefit reduced or stopped for a set period of time, this is known as a sanction.

How long does a sanction last?

High level sanctions usually last for 91 days. If you have had a high level sanction before in the past year, the sanction might last 182 days.

Challenge a Sanction

If you have been sanctioned, the first thing you need to do is ask the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to reconsider their decision, this is called a 'mandatory reconsideration'. This should be done in writing and can be sent or handed into your local jobcentre. You should always keep a copy of your application.

If you disagree with the Mandatory Reconsideration Notice, you can appeal to a tribunal. You must wait for the ‘Mandatory Reconsideration Notice’ before you start an appeal.
