Overview
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a government initiative in the UK aimed at making it easier for individuals and businesses to keep track of their tax affairs and submit their tax returns electronically. Under a phased programme, the self-employed and landlords will be required to keep digital records of all their transactions, including sales, purchases, and expenses.
VAT registered businesses were already required to store digital records since 1 April 2022.

Making Tax Digital

Who is affected by MTD: MTD applies to VAT-registered businesses with a taxable turnover above the VAT threshold, which is currently £85,000. If you meet this criteria, you will need to keep digital records of your VAT transactions and use MTD-compatible software to submit your VAT returns to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). From April 2026, sole traders earning over £50,000 will have to switch to using Making Tax Digital (MTD) for their income tax.
Keeping digital records: To comply with MTD, you will need to keep digital records of your VAT transactions. This includes invoices, receipts, and any other relevant VAT-related documents.
